About the course
Over the centuries, a variety of motives have led people to develop their relationship with the sea. At times, the sea served as protection creating an impassable barrier, while at others it offered a major medium for travel and trade, becoming a powerful driving force for progress. In many ways, sea-related activities helped shape the course of human history. That is why maritime studies, through the lens of underwater archaeology, provide a crucial element in gaining a deeper understanding of our history.
Maritime archaeology is an archaeological subdiscipline that deals with the remnants of human activity from the past, found in the sea, interconnected waterways and lakes, as well as in adjacent territories. Marine archaeological evidence reflects traces of material culture, both underwater and on the surface.
This online course was created in the "Archaeological Research" scientific and educational center of Sevastopol State University. It draws on the experience and expertise gained from implementing the only master's program in Russia focusing on maritime archaeology in 2018–2020
You will know
  • The history of maritime archaeology, its goals and objectives
  • Modern views and assessment of maritime archaeology methodological framework
  • Historical stages and patterns in marine studies

  • To analyze and outline the history of maritime archaeology
  • To draw chronological parallels between historical processes

Why can't scuba divers ascend too quickly from a dive?
It's totally fine if it takes you several dives to explore the underwater world. Decompression sickness is an extremely dangerous condition. That's why it's so important to follow safety rules
